"SOFTLY FLOWS THE TWEED" This is the new release by Bob, released in November 2007. The CD is a Scottish traditional music album, all the tunes being original compositions by Bob Liddle from Kelso. All the tunes titles relate to the story of the Tweed, from Tweed’s Well to Tweedmouth, and include reels, jigs, slow airs and marches. Most of the tunes are new compositions, but the CD also includes some older tunes of Bob’s, including “Roxburgh Tower”, which has now been recorded by 5 of the top Scottish dance bands. The music is mainly accordion, mixed in with whistles, flutes, saxophone, synthesiser and bagpipes, and with accompaniment provided by guitars, keyboards, bodhran and drums, all played and recorded by Bob in his home studio. The end result is a fresh look at traditional music with many interesting and different arrangements.
The CD is the result of the last couple of years composing by Bob, all tunes written during this period with the CD in mind, and the CD consists of 35 original tunes over 16 tracks. All the tunes are given names relating to the river Tweed, such as “Caddon Water”, “The Yair”, “Mayfield Walk”, as well as the title track, the slow air “Softly Flows The Tweed”. The sleeve notes also contain various pictures of the Tweed and explanations about the tunes. "Softly Flows The Tweed" has had a great response since it's release. Bob has appeared on Radio Borders and Moray Firth Radio talking about the CD, and it is getting regular airplay with these and other Scottish radio stations. "AULD FAVOURITES" Bob's previous album, released in 2001. As the title suggests, this CD features all the old tunes known and liked by much of the Scottish public. Favourites such as "The Dark Island", "The Jaqueline Waltz" and a set of Andrew Rankine jigs are included. This album has a mostly Scottish Dance Band feel to it, all the sets being in traditional SDB format, and once again all the instruments are played by Bob and recorded in his own studio at Kelso.
"BIRLIN' BUTTONS" This album was recorded in 1996 at Cobby Studios, Kelso, and features several of Bob's earlier compositions such as "Glen & Margaret's Arran Wedding", "Roxburgh Tower" and "The Cobby". Also featured is a lively jazz set with "I Love Paris", "Baby Face" and "Marching Through Georgia". This CD also has a couple of guest musicians, accordionist Charlie McIntee and piper Alan Veitch, both of whom contribute a couple of cracking sets. "Birlin' Buttons" was much of an experimental album, with various instruments used including guitars, flutes and synthesisers. The album also includes the ever-popular "Highland Cathedral" and concludes with a cracking set of Harry Lauder tunes.
"ONE MAN BAND" This is Bob's first album, recorded in 1994 and released mainly on cassette, although CDs are available. This album contains many accordion favourites including "Jolly Beggarman", "Jim Tweedie's Sealegs", "Kate Martin's Waltz", "The Old Rustic Bridge", "Margaret's Waltz" and "Harvest Home". Also incuded is an accordion version of the Patsy Cline hit "Sweet Dreams of You". Eight original compositions by Bob are on this album, including "A Waltz for Vicky", Eck Patterson's March" and "Ian & Elsie of Thorn Cottage". |
